Compared with the previous exam, Business Environment now carries much more weight, and the outline adds emphasis on AI, sustainability, value delivery and stakeholder engagement.

Exam-Day Logistics

• Where you take it: You can take the exam in person at a Pearson VUE test center or online with Pearson VUE OnVUE remote proctoring. In mainland China the exam is paper-based.
• Identification: Check the identification rules in your appointment confirmation and make sure the name on your ID matches your PMI profile.
• Breaks: There are two scheduled 10-minute breaks. The first comes after the case study section and the second about midway through the remaining questions. Once you start a break, you cannot go back to the previous section.

PMP Certification Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or higher and 36 months (3 years) of experience

Experience must be non-overlapping and gained within the last 10 years. PMI now measures experience in months, so the older 4,500 and 7,500 hour rules no longer apply.

Project management education: You also need 35 hours of project management training aligned with the ECO, or an active CAPM certification. Books and practice exams alone do not count. From 1 December 2026, live instructor-led hours count only when delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited academic program. Self-paced on-demand courses from any provider, and training completed before 1 December 2026, remain eligible.

Application and audit: You apply online and pay the exam fee after PMI accepts your application. Some applications are randomly selected for audit, in which case you have 90 days to submit supporting documents. Once approved, you have one year to take the exam, with up to three attempts.

Post-Exam Steps

Exam Results

If you pass, congratulations. If not, use the domain feedback in your score report to plan your next attempt. You can take the exam up to three times within your one-year eligibility period. The retake fee is USD 275 for PMI members and USD 375 for non-members (checked in October 2026 and can change).

Maintaining Your Certification

The PMP follows a 3-year certification cycle. To renew, you earn 60 professional development units (PDUs) during each cycle and pay the renewal fee. At least 35 PDUs must come from education, with a minimum of 8 each in Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen, and up to 25 PDUs can come from giving back to the profession. Current PMP holders do not need to retake the exam because of the 2026 update.
