A practical guide to PMI-RMP certification training: what a good course covers, which education hours PMI accepts, the current eligibility rules and the steps to earn the credential.

Introduction
Are you looking to grow your career in project management and stand out in a competitive job market? The PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP) certification is built for people who want to specialize in project risk. This guide explains what PMI-RMP certification training involves, what a good course should cover, which training counts toward PMI's education requirement, and the steps to earn your certificate.
What is PMI-RMP Certification Training?
The PMI-RMP is a credential awarded only by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It shows that you can identify, assess and respond to risks in projects. PMI-RMP certification training prepares you for the exam and also helps you meet one of PMI's eligibility rules: before you apply, you must complete 30 or 40 contact hours of project risk management education, depending on your degree.
PMI describes the PMI-RMP as suited to people with 3 to 5 years of experience, including project managers, risk managers, functional managers and senior executives.
Benefits of PMI-RMP Training
- Stronger Risk Management Skills: Training helps you develop strategies that reduce project disruption and make better use of opportunities.
- Meeting the Education Requirement: Instructor-led training from a training company can count toward the 30 or 40 contact hours PMI requires.
- Career Development: Holding the PMI-RMP demonstrates your commitment to risk management, which can support promotions and new roles.
- International Relevance: PMI is a global professional association, and the exam is offered in English, Arabic and Chinese (Simplified).
What a PMI-RMP Training Curriculum Should Cover
A good PMI-RMP course follows the five domains of PMI's current PMI-RMP Exam Content Outline. The weights show how much of the exam each domain represents:
- Risk Strategy and Planning (22%): risk appetite and thresholds, the risk management plan, and linking risk strategy to project and business goals.
- Risk Identification (23%): finding threats and opportunities and building the risk register.
- Risk Analysis (23%): qualitative and quantitative analysis to prioritize risks and understand overall exposure.
- Risk Response (13%): choosing, planning and implementing responses, and assigning risk owners.
- Monitor and Close Risks (19%): tracking risks and responses, reporting, and closing risks with lessons learned.
Predictive, agile and hybrid approaches appear across all five domains, so expect questions that test how risk management changes with the project approach.

Which Training Counts Toward PMI's Education Hours?
PMI counts one classroom hour as one contact hour. The education must cover project risk management and be finished before you apply, but there is no time limit on when you took it. According to PMI, qualifying education can come from:
- PMI Authorized Training Partners
- Employer or company-sponsored programs
- Training companies or consultants
- Distance-learning providers that include an end-of-course assessment
- University or college programs
Self-directed learning, such as reading books, watching videos or sessions with coaches or mentors, does not count toward the contact hours. PMI chapter meetings do not count either, except for any time spent on a learning activity of at least one hour. Online, instructor-led training can count, which makes it a practical option if you are working full time.

How to Get Your PMI-RMP Certificate
Earning the PMI-RMP is a clear sign of your commitment to risk management. Here are the steps, based on PMI's current rules.
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
You need to meet one of three sets of requirements. Experience must be in project risk management and fall within the last 5 years:
- Set A: secondary diploma (high school or global equivalent), 36 months of project risk management experience and 40 hours of project risk management education.
- Set B: bachelor's degree or higher, 24 months of experience and 30 hours of education.
- Set C: bachelor's degree or higher from a GAC-accredited program, 12 months of experience and 30 hours of education.
Step 2: Complete Your Risk Management Education
Finish the 30 or 40 contact hours before you apply. Keep your course records, because PMI may ask for them if your application is audited.
Step 3: Apply to PMI
You apply directly to PMI online at pmi.org. Your application stays open for 90 days while you complete it. Any application can be selected for audit, and you then have 90 days to send the supporting documents.
Step 4: Pay the Exam Fee and Schedule
After PMI approves your application, you pay the exam fee: USD 520 for PMI members or USD 670 for non-members (PMI USA store, checked in October 2026 and can change). PMI then emails your Eligibility ID. You have 1 year to take the exam, with up to 3 attempts. For a full cost breakdown, see our guide to PMI-RMP certification cost.
Step 5: Study for the Exam
PMI does not endorse specific review courses, but its exam outline lists reference books, including The Standard for Risk Management in Portfolios, Programs, and Projects (PMI), the PMBOK Guide (7th edition), Practical Project Risk Management: The ATOM Methodology (Hillson and Simon) and Identifying and Managing Project Risk (Kendrick). Combine these with structured training and exam-style practice questions to get used to the question format.
Step 6: Take the PMI-RMP Exam
The exam has 115 questions (100 scored and 15 unscored pretest questions) and lasts 150 minutes. Questions are multiple-choice and multiple-answer select. You can take it at a Pearson VUE test center or as an online proctored exam. PMI does not publish a fixed passing score; your score report shows pass or fail and feedback for each domain.
Step 7: Maintain Your Certification
The PMI-RMP is valid for a 3-year cycle. To renew, earn 30 professional development units (PDUs) per cycle, with at least 18 Education PDUs, at most 12 Giving Back PDUs and at least 4 PDUs in each PMI Talent Triangle area (Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen), then pay the renewal fee.
